If i look at the supportmatrix 2012 R2 is supported on the following versions:

Latest Software Release Support

• Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard, Datacenter (CMS and Managed Node)
• Microsoft Windows Standard Storage Server 2012 R2 (Managed Node)

You can read about this on the following URL:

When you read the first link it says that the Essentials version is not yet supported.
